DAVID HESS is ABLE WHITMAN
David Hess (Last House on the Left, House at the Edge of the Park, Hitch-Hike) is best known as the lead in the notorious Last House on the Left (1972), the film that launched director Wes Craven's career. "For my money, David Hess is the most intense American actor working today," says director Lee Demarbre. "It's a real honour to be directing him."
SASHA GREY is APRIL CARSON
Of adult film star Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience, 2007 Penthouse Pet of The Month, 2008 AVN Award – Female Performer of the Year), Demarbre says, "Her onscreen emotional range is incredible – she can act better than most mainstream film stars. Plus, she's a genuine film lover – she knows more about Goddard and Cassavetes than I do." Casting adult stars in Canadian horror films is not without precedent – David Cronenberg cast Marilyn Chambers (Behind the Green Door) in his film Rabid in 1977.
MICHAEL BERRYMAN is PHILIP FARMSWORTH, JR.
Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, The Devil's Rejects), most often recognized as the monstrous Pluto from The Hills Have Eyes (1977) was born with a rare condition known as hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, which prevents the formation of hair, fingernails, teeth, and sweat glands, Mr. Berryman is frequently cast in villainous roles. "But we have him playing against type," says Demarbre. "I think people will be surprised."
RAY SAGER is REVEREND ROSCOE BOONE
Ray Sager (The Wizard of Gore, The Gore Gore Girls, Just for the Hell of It) may not be a household name, but anyone who's seen the film Juno (2007 Academy Award winner for best screenplay) has seen him. In the scene where Ellen Page and Jason Bateman debate horror films, the movie they watch is none other than Herschell Gordon Lewis' The Wizard of Gore, starring Sager as the eponymous wizard. While Sager has rarely acted since 1972, he has been very active as a producer in Toronto, bringing the world such should-be-classics as Prom Night II, Prom Night III and Prom Night IV – as well as countless hours of Canadian television.
HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS is FRED SANDY
Known as "The Godfather of Gore", Herschell Gordon Lewis (director, Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs, The Wizard of Gore ) invented the gore genre – a precursor to the slasher film – when he directed Blood Feast in 1963. A personal hero of director Demarbre, Mr. Lewis deemed the script for Smash Cut "a hoot", and agreed to appear in it – making this the first of remake/homage to his career to receive such a blessing.
JESSE BUCK is ISAAC BEAUMONDE
For ten years, Jesse has been creating, studying and performing in the styles of Clown, Bouffon and physical theatre. Jesse was one of the founding members of Counternotes Theatre Group. He is a veteran performer with Ottawa's Odyssey Theatre, and was the principal in their production of Molière's Scapin. He is currently on tour with Cirque du Soleil. Jesse makes his feature-film debut in Smash Cut.
JENNILEE MURRAY is GIGI SPOT
Jennilee Murray is a creator. Her medium and message changes often; she draws, paints, makes music, acts, sculpts and does whatever else she can get her hands on. She sees possibilities everywhere, including in Smash Cut, which marks her feature-film debut. Since appearing in Smash Cut, she has gone on to roles in other films, including the Zed Filmworks production, Stripped Naked.
MIKE DUBUE is ALAN DACHMAN
A polymath musician, singer-songwriter and composer, Mr. Dubue headlines new-wave/pop/experimental band The Hilotrons and plays, or has played in, such storied combos as The Empiricals, Kepler, Boycrusher and Clark. He has also composed music for several films, including Smash Cut, The Dead Sleep Easy, and Vampiro: Angel, Devil, Hero. This is his feature-film acting debut.
GUEN DOUGLAS is GRETCHEN GREGORSKI
Smash Cut marks Guen Douglas' long-awaited return to the big screen, after an appearance in 2001's Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. A professional tattoo artist, bon vivant and muse, Guen makes an indelible impression wherever she goes.
PETER DILLON is OZZIE KOHLBERG
Peter Dillon has been a professional actor and member of ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema Television and Radio Artists) since 1988. Peter has extensive performing experience in Film, Television, Industrial Videos, Interactive CD ROMS, Animation, Comedic Interactive Dinner Theatre, Radio and Television commercials.
